New Delhi [India], May 6: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), also known as Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD), is an increasingly common hormonal imbalance that affects millions of women globally. Characterized by elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), PCOS disrupts the normal function of the ovaries, often leading to the formation of small cysts, irregular menstrual cycles, and fertility issues.
According to Dr. Harish Verma, a leading Ayurvedic physician and head of the Canadian College of Ayurveda and Yoga, PCOS is more than just a reproductive health concern—it impacts the body’s entire hormonal system. “Many people confuse PCOD with PCOS,” Dr. Verma explains. “While both conditions are related, PCOS is typically more severe and affects metabolic, dermatological, and psychological health as well.”
Recognizing the Symptoms
PCOS manifests in a variety of ways, including:
- Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Excessive facial or body hair (hirsutism)
- Acne and oily skin
- Weight gain and difficulty losing weight
- Hair thinning or hair loss
- Darkened skin patches, especially on the neck or underarms
- Difficulty in conceiving
- Occasional headaches
Diagnosis is usually confirmed through a combination of symptom evaluation, medical history, blood tests to assess hormone levels, pelvic ultrasound scans, glucose tolerance testing, and lipid profile checks.
The Ayurvedic Approach to PCOS
While modern medicine often addresses PCOS with hormonal treatments and insulin-sensitizing drugs, Ayurveda views the condition as a lifestyle disorder that requires holistic correction of bodily imbalances.
Dr. Verma emphasizes the role of poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, and mental stress in the rise of PCOS cases. In response, he has developed three types of specialized Ayurveda based formulations with time-tested herbs such as Ashoka, Lodhra, Shatavari, Yashtimadhu, Dhataki Pushpa, Haridra etc. These formulations, administered in precise proportions, helps naturally restore hormonal balance.
“Unlike conventional medications, this Ayurvedic blend is not only cost-effective but also free from side effects,” Dr. Verma says. “Hundreds of women have already reported significant improvements and even complete relief from symptoms using this treatment.”
To assist women dealing with PCOS and PCOD, a dedicated helpline (9910672020) has been launched to provide guidance and support regarding this Ayurvedic treatment.
He further explains that untreated PCOS can lead to several serious health conditions, and its symptoms can cause significant distress, such as Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, depression or mood disorders, and uterine (endometrial) cancer.
Given its potential long-term impact, early diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment approach are crucial.
